Spring 2008 Games Recap

April 19, 2008 -- Capitol Cup vs. Catholic University

Washington, DC -- Georgetown won its eleventh straight Capitol Cup Championship as the best team in the District, beating Catholic University, 38-5. The Hoyas entered the scoreboard early with an unconverted try by fullback Phil Cooney '10. Catholic answered back to even the score. After back and forth play by both teams, the Hoyas closed the half leading by seven points. The second half was a different story with the Hoyas scoring another four unanswered tries, highlighting some explosive runs and holding the opposition scoreless.

Fullback Phil Cooney '10 score a hat trick of tries for 15 points. Scrumhalf Brian Litwak '10 added four conversion for eight points. Outside center Brendan Smith '10 added a try, and wing Keenan Conrad '11 and outside center Rob Moore '11 each scored their first A Side try.

April 6, 2008 -- Cherry Blossom Tournament Day 2

Ft. Washington, MD -- Georgetown won the 42nd Annual Cherry Blossom Tournament held in Rosecroft Raceway in Ft. Washington, MD. In the championship match, the Hoyas defeated West Virginia University, 3-0. Georgetown entered the Cup bracket as the sixth seed team against the number one seed team, which was based on scores in pool play the day before. With the weather and field conditions limiting both teams in scoring opportunities, Georgetown continued to shut down its opponents only giving up five points the entire weekend in five games. Scrumhalf Brian Litwak '10 converted a penalty kick in the closing minutes to give Georgetown its second tourney championship since 2005. In the semi final match, Georgetown defeated University of Michigan 10-0. Hooker Matt Hammel '10 scored the only try, and Litwak added a conversion and a penalty kick. In the quarterfinal match to begin the day against UMass, Georgetown displayed excellent defense and Litwak capitalized on a late penalty to advance.

April 5, 2008 -- Cherry Blossom Tournament Day 1

Ft. Washington, MD -- Georgetown won both games of pool play on the first day of the 42nd Annual Cherry Blossom Tournament. In the very early game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania, both teams displayed tough defense, but Georgetown broke through in the closing minutes for the game's only score by flyhalf Alex Parkhouse '08. Scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09 converted the extra points. In the second game against the defending tournament champs, Yale University, the Hoyas took advantage of Yale's penalties in the first half for two converted penalty kicks by scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09. Yale's only score was in the second half when they intercepted a pass and went half way the distance for the unconverted try. Georgetown continued to apply the pressure to defeat Yale 6-5. Georgetown advances to the Cup Bracket for Sunday's quarterfinal game.

March 29, 2008 -- MARFU Semifinals vs. Radford University

Mechanicsville, VA -- Georgetown lost in the MARFU Semi Finals against the eventual MARFU champs Radford University (VRU #1), 3-57. The Hoyas pressured the larger Radford team in the opening 20 minutes of the match until Radford broke through for the score. Georgetown was limited in possession and was held to only a penalty kick by scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09. The 3rd place place game was forfeited by East Stroudsburg (ERPU #1) because they were unable to field enough players. Thank you to all our family and friends who came out to support the Hoyas. Georgetown will play next weekend in the 42nd Annual Cherry Blossom Tournament held in Rosecroft Raceway in Ft. Washington, MD.

March 22, 2008 -- MARFU Quarterfinals vs. Albright College

Accokeek, MD -- Georgetown advanced to the MARFU Final 4 for its fifth time in six years with the defeat against Albright College, 48-26, the EPRU #2 team. The Hoyas scored five tries for 31 points in the first half until Albright entered the scoreboard near half time. Both teams each scored three tries in the second half. Georgetown will travel to Mechanicsville, VA next weekend for the MARFU semi finals against Radford Unviersity (VRU #1).

Fullback Phil Cooney '10 led the team scoring with two tries for 10 points. Scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09 converted four tries for eight points. Tries were scored by inside center Mike Masterson '08, wing Matt Tully '10, outside center Brendan Smith '10, flyhalf Alex Parkhouse '08, and hooker Matt Hammel '10. Flanker Dan Bercik '11 scored his first A side try.

March 15, 2008 -- vs. University of Virginia

Charlottesville, VA -- Georgetown defeated University of Virginia of the MARFU D1 League, with the final score of 18-12. The Hoyas played their final game in preparation for the MARFU Quarterfinals next Saturday. The Hoyas took advantage of an early Cavalier penalty for the converted penalty kick. Virginia scored later in the half and looked to take charge of the game with a converted try early in the second half, but Georgetown's defense pressured the Cavaliers for three unanswered unconverted tries in the second half to secure the win. The Hoyas last beat Virginia in the fall of 2005. Georgetown will host Albright College (EPRU #2) in the MARFU Quarterfinals during Easter weekend.

March 1, 2008 -- vs. Princeton University

Baltimore, MD -- Georgetown defeated Princeton University, an EPRU Division 1 team, with the final score of 10-7. Princeton challenged the Hoyas on both sides of the field but Georgetown's defense was solid and took advantage of limited opportunities to earn its second spring season victory during the first weekend of spring break. Princeton's score was a result of the Hoyas' ball mishandling and returned half the distance for a try. Georgetown is on spring break this week and will play next Sunday against West Potomac Men's Club.

In the B Side game, comprised of 10 on 10, Georgetown defeated Princeton B 25-0. Wing Logan Tiari '09 scored a hat trick of tries for 15 points. Flyhalf Brock Magruder '10 and prop Jesse Mueller '10 each scored a try.

February 8, 2008 -- vs. Loyola College

Baltimore, MD -- Georgetown won the spring season opener against PRU division 2 team Loyola College, 35-13. The first half consisted of traded penalty kicks by both teams for a tied game at the half. The Hoyas warmed up and sparked an exciting second half that resulted in five tries and pressured Loyola throughout the half. Georgetown gave up a try in the closing minutes, but responded for another try to close out the game. Georgetown will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania next weekend.

Scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09 led the team scoring with two penalty kicks, a try and two conversions for 15 points. Prop Tim Brown '09, wing John Llaneza '10, and wing James Grant '09 each scored a try. Eightman Andrew Benson '09 scored his first A Side try.
