Spring 2007 Games Recap April 14, 2007 Capitol Cup vs. Catholic University Washington, DC -- Georgetown defeated Catholic University, 26-20, to win the Capitol Cup Championship as the best team in the District for 10 years in a row. Georgetown looked to run away with the Cup going ahead with two tries early in the first half by wing John Castrigano '07 and inside center Joe Kemper '09, but Catholic shifted momentum and answered back with three unanswered tries. Georgetown tied the game before half time with a score by wing Phil Cooney '10. The second half displayed excellent defense and ball control for the Hoyas shutting down Catholic, denying their long runs. Georgetown's only score in the second half was by lock John Fisher-Thompson '09. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07's two penalty kicks extended the lead as Catholic scored with two minutes left in the match. Scoring Summary (A Side): GAME B RECAP: Scoring Summary (B Side): April 8, 2007 Cherry Blossom Tournament vs. King's Point Ft. Washington, MD -- The Hoyas defeated all pool opponents and matched with King's Point U.S. Merchant Marine Academy from New York in the Cup Championship bracket, 14-28. King's Point came into the match fresh, having their morning game forfeited. Georgetown scored early and had several scoring opportunities, but King's Point's physical game backed down the Hoyas and gave up three straight tries. Georgetown's scores were by prop Tim Brown '09 and hooker Eric Pallotta '07. Summa converted both tries. For the weekend tournament, inside center Andy Gottlieb '08 led the team in four scoring tries for 20 points, and flyhalf Keith Summa '07 led the team scoring for 24 points. Georgetown will finish the spring season next weekend in the Capitol Cup Tournament for the best team in the District. Scoring Summary (A Side): April 8, 2007 Cherry Blossom Tournament vs. Temple University Ft. Washington, MD -- Georgetown finished 1-1 in the second day of the Cherry Blossom Tournament. The Hoyas defeated Temple University from Pennsylvania in their pool play on early Easter Sunday morning, 24-0. Georgetown scored 19 points in the first half with tries from prop Tim Brown '09, inside center Andy Gottlieb '08, and prop Alex Gorodetsky '09. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added two conversions. The second half posted a score by wing Matt Schmid '07. Scoring Summary (A Side): April 7, 2007 Cherry Blossom Tournament vs. Slippery Rock University Ft. Washington, MD -- In the second game, Georgetown defeated Slippery Rock University from Pennsylvania with the final score of 25-10. The Hoyas scored 22 straight points as the opposition atttempted a late comeback. Tries were scored by prop Alex Gorodetsky '09, flanker Joe Drummey '10, and Gottlieb. Summa added 10 points with two penalty kicks and two conversions. Scoring Summary (A Side): April 7, 2007 Cherry Blossom Tournament vs. Catholic University Ft. Washington, MD -- Georgetown was victorious in both games on the first day of the Cherry Blossom Tournament held in Rosecroft Raceway in Ft. Washington, MD. Georgetown fielded a 21-man team for the tournament despite missing more than half the team away on Easter break, as with other colleges. The team remain competitive with the seniors and gave playing opportunities for the first year players. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 led the day scoring with five conversions and two penalty kicks for 16 points, and inside center Andy Gottlieb '08 finished the day with a total of three tries for 15 points. The Hoyas will continue into their pool play on Sunday morning against Temple University from Pennsylvania (8:35AM on Field #2). In the first game, Georgetown defeated local rival, Catholic University, with the final score of 26-0. Scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09 scored a try and eightman Sebastian Livesey '07 and Gottlieb each scored their first A side tries. Summa added three conversions for six points. Scoring Summary (A Side): March 24, 2007 MARFU Quarterfinals vs. Radford University Radford, VA -- Georgetown lost to Radford University in the Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinals with the final score of 32-50. The Hoyas, coming in as the Potomac Rugby Union #3 seeded team, fell into an early 14 point deficit in the opening minutes, and Georgetown fought back to take the lead temporarily midway in the first half. The opposition took advantage of the Hoyas' infractions and turnovers to finish with two additional tries right before half time. In the second half, Georgetown looked to make a comeback, but the Virginia Union top ranked team responded after every Georgetown score, marking the first time Georgetown missed the MARFU Final 4 in the last four years. For the remainder of the season, the Hoyas are scheduled for the Cherry Blossom Tournament in Ft. Washington, MD during Easter Weekend and the Capitol Cup Championships for the best team in the District. Wing John Castrigano '07 led the team in scoring with a try, two penalty kicks, and three conversions for 17 points. Flanker Joe Drummey '10, prop Alex Gorodetsky '09, inside center Joe Kemper '09 each scored a try. Scoring Summary (A Side): GAME B RECAP: Scoring Summary (B Side): March 3, 2007 vs. Naval Academy C Annapolis, MD -- Georgetown shut out the Naval Academy's Division 2 Team with the final score of 29-0 in its third game this spring. The Hoyas scored early, but mistakes kept them from advancing and faced multiple Navy attacks inside their territory. Georgetown's defense prevented Navy from scoring and created more opportunities to score their five tries in the game. Heading into spring break, the Hoyas fielded a mixed side, resulting in first A Side scores by flanker Joe Drummey '10, prop Alex Gorodetsky '09, and wing Brian Litwak '10. Wing John Castrigano '07 led the scoring with a try and conversion for seven points. Scrumhalf Dan Castrigano '09 scored a try and Litwak added another conversion. The Hoyas are on Spring Break this week and will play Loyola College in Baltimore on March 17. The week after, Georgetown will travel to Radford University in Virginia for the Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinals. Scoring Summary (A Side): February 24, 2007 vs. University of Virginia Charlottesville, VA -- Georgetown lost to the two-time Virginia State Champions, University of Virginia, with the final score of 11-21. Playing in its second game this spring, Georgetown threatened Virginia early in the first half and came away with a penalty kick by wing John Castrigano '07. As both teams went back and forth, Virginia took advantage of the Hoyas' penalty to run in for a try. Late Virgnia surges were stopped by the Hoyas' goal line defense to keep the game close going in the second half. The Cavaliers scored two converted tries, and the Hoyas finished the game with a try by lock John Fisher-Thompson '09 and another penalty kick by Castrigano. Georgetown will travel to Annapolis, MD to play the Naval Academy D2 team before spring break. Scoring Summary (A Side): GAME B RECAP: Scoring Summary (B Side): February 17, 2007 vs. Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA -- Georgetown kicked off the spring season in Blacksburg, VA against VRU D1 opponent Virginia Tech with the final score of 22-43. The Hoyas entered the scoreboard six minutes into the match with a breakaway try by wing John Castrigano '07. Capitalizing on Virginia Tech's mistakes, the Hoyas extended their lead with scores by centers Joe Kemper '09 and Sean McNamara '09. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added a penalty kick and Castrigano converted two tries for a team leading nine points. Georgetown looked to secure the lead midway into the first half, but VA Tech continued to attack wide and took advantage of the field conditions to score the final six tries and hold Georgetown scoreless in the second half. With 10 minutes left in the match, the coaches decided to end the game to prevent additional injuries on the frozen ground. Both teams found that wearing sneakers provided more traction on the frozen field, but was not enough to keep several players from slipping and falling hard on the ground. The B Side game was canceled due to the frozen field conditions. Georgetown will travel to Chalottesville, VA next Saturday to take on Virginia State Champs, University of Virginia.
