April 23, 2005 Capital Cup Finals vs. Catholic

Washington, DC -- Georgetown captured its eighth consecutive Capital Cup Championship with a victory against Catholic University, 36-7. The Hoyas were on the scoreboard early with outside center Mark Bittmann's first try. Georgetown continued their offensive attack with 27 unanswered points until the Cardinals took the length of the field in the second half for a converted score.

Outside center Mark Bittmann '05 scored two tries for 10 points. Inside center Jeff Miller '06, eightman Greg Suellentrop '05, wing Rich Staley '05, and flanker Mike McCourt '06 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added three conversions for six points.

April 17, 2005 Capital Cup Semis vs. American

Washington, DC -- In the first game against American University, Georgetown went berserk with 11 tries in 40 minutes for a 69-0 shut out. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 led the team scoring with a try and five conversions for 15 points. Fullback Ben Purcell '05 scored a try and converted two kicks for nine points. Flanker Greg Suellentrop '05 and wing Paul Detjen '06 scored two tries for 10 points. Prop Pat MacKay '05 and lock Tom McKiernan '05 each scored a try. Wing Pat O'Brien '05, flanker Richard Vilmenay '08, and inside center Adam Glazer '07 scored their first A side try.

April 17, 2005 National Final 4 vs. Northern Colorado

Santa Cruz, CA -- Georgetown fell to Northern Colorado in the National Final 4, 10-23. With a tied game at the half, 10-10, Georgetown was held scoreless in the second half with the opponent scoring 13 points in the final 12 minutes of the match. Fullback Ben Purcell '05 scored both tries for the Hoyas. Colorado maintained majority of the possession as the Hoyas capitalized in their limited opportunities. This was a friendly match overall despite the official giving out a total of six yellow cards, with the Hoyas receiving two.

April 16, 2005 National Elite 8 vs. Idaho State

Santa Cruz, CA -- Georgetown advanced to the National Final 4 with a victory against Idaho State, 58-19. The Hoyas controlled most of the match with a quick score in the opening minutes by flanker Greg Suellentrop '05. Georgetown scored 24 points in the first half before Idaho State capitalized on a Georgetown mistake to end the half 24-7.

In the second half, Idaho State scored early but Georgetown finished off with 34 points in the second half. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 led the team scoring with 18 points. Flanker Greg Suellentrop '05 scored three tries for 15 points. Fullback Ben Purcell '05, prop Tony Grusich '06, wing Paul Detjen '06 each scored a try. Scrumhalf Keith Summa '07 was awarded the penalty try and outside center Brion McGlinn '06 scored his first A side try.

April 9, 2005 Cherry Blossom Tourney Day 2

Washington, DC -- Georgetown defeated the Naval Academy in the Cherry Blossom Tourney Championships, 21-0. Though the Hoyas were devasted with a first game loss yesterday, Georgetown went on a rampage for 73 points in day two in three games and three shutouts in four straight tournament wins to win the entire tournament. In the finals match, the Hoyas were up by six points at the half with two penalty kicks by flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05. The highlights in the second half were flanker Greg Suellentrop's try for 60 meters and prop Kerr Mone smashing in for a try in the corner. Suellentrop received the tournament MVP honor.

In five tournament games, Ludwigson led the team scoring with 43 points. Suellentrop scored four tries for 20 points. Detjen and Purcell each scored three tries for 15 points. Five other players scored a try.

In the semifinal match against James Madison, Georgetown scored six tries to none to advance with the final score of 38-0. Fullback Ben Purcell '05 scored two tries to lead the team with 10 points. Wing Paul Detjen '06, eightman Tom McKiernan '05, Suellentrop, and outside center Mark Bittman '05 each scored a try. Ludwigson converted four tries for eight points.

In the pool play against Buffalo in the morning, Detjen scored the only try for the Hoyas. Ludwigson converted three penalty kicks for nine points to win 14-10.

April 9, 2005 Cherry Blossom Tourney Day 1

Washington, DC -- Georgetown finished the first day of the Cherry Blossom Tournament with a win and a loss. In the first match of the day, the Hoyas fell to VMI in the final play, 21-24, though beating VMI last weekend. Georgetown came out strong but VMI's final surge in the short match allowed them to score 12 points in the closing minutes. This loss marks the Hoyas first loss since April 4, 2004. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 scored a try, converted a penalty kick, and added a conversion to lead the team scoring with 10 points. Flanker Greg Suellentrop '05 and lock Jim Suehr '06 each scored a try.

In the second match of the day, Georgetown shut out West Virginia in a good ol' Georgetown Rugby fashion, 19-0. Prop Pat MacKay '05, flanker Greg Suellentrop '05, and wing Paul Detjen '06 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added two conversions for four points.

The Hoyas will play on Sunday against Buffalo at 9:40am on Field 3. Since Buffalo won their match against VMI 14-8, the Hoyas have to win to advance to the Cup Championship Bracket.

April 3, 2005 MARFU Finals vs. Salisbury

Princeton, NJ -- Georgetown earned its first trip to the National Elite 8 with a victory against PRU rival Salisbury in the MARFU Championships, 6-3. The match went back and forth with several momentum changes. There were no tries scored, and the teams' hopes of scoring were only three penalty kick attempts each. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 converted two of the three penalty kicks for the Hoyas' only score for six points. Salisbury scored first on the penalty kick but missed two penalty kicks awarded in the final two minutes. The Elite 8 is in Santa Cruz, California on April 16-17. The Hoyas are seeded #1 in Nationals against the Pacific #2 team (seed #8).

April 2, 2005 MARFU Semifinals vs. Virginia Military Institute

Princeton, NJ -- Georgetown advanced to the MARFU Finals with a victory against VMI, 27-9. Though Georgetown controlled the first half with only two tries for 10 points, VMI pressured the Hoyas with three penalty kicks for nine points midway into the second half, 10-9. However, the Hoyas did not disappoint and took over for the final 20 minutes with three unanswered tries for 17 points. Georgetown will play the defending national champions Salisbury in the finals on Sunday at 12:30pm on field 2. Last November, Georgetown defeated Salisbury in the PRU finals. Only the winner of the MARFU finals will advance to the National Elite 8 in California.

Wing Rich Staley '05, flanker Greg Suellentrop '05, wing Paul Detjen '06, hooker Eric Pallotta '07, and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added a conversion.

March 26, 2005 MARFU Quarterfinals vs. Mary Washington

Rockville, MD -- Georgetown advanced to the MARFU Final 4 for the third straight year with a victory against Mary Washington, 19-7. In a close match and some missed opportunities, the Hoyas sealed the victory with a try by eightman Mike Zoch '06. Georgetown continues on the road to the Final 4 in Princeton next weekend against Virginia Military Institute (VRU 2).

Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 scored a try and kicked in two conversions to lead the team scoring with nine points. Wing Paul Detjen '06 and eightman Mike Zoch '06 each scored a try.

March 19, 2005 vs. University of Pennsylvania

Philadelphia, PA -- Georgetown finished in a 15-15 tied game against University of Pennsylvania, the Division 1 EPRU #1 team. The Hoyas broke through the opposition's pressure with 10 minutes into the game to score their first try by flanker Greg Suellentrop '05. Georgetown looked to control the game with another try by wing Rich Staley '05, but UPenn held the Hoyas to only three points in the second half and a game tying score in the closing minutes. Georgetown will host in the MARFU Quarterfinals during Easter weekend next Saturday against Mary Washington.

Flanker Greg Suellentrop '05 and wing Rich Staley '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added a conversion and a penalty kick for five points.

March 13, 2005 vs. Potomac Athletic Club (mixed side)

Rockville, MD -- Georgetown returned from spring break to scrimmage against a mixed side from Potomac Athletic Club (PAC) men's club. PAC got on the scoreboard first with a corner try, but the Hoyas answered back when outside center Mark Bittmann '05 received a pass from the Hoyas 10m line and outran the PAC defenders; team captain/flyhalf Keith Summa '07 converted the try for a 7-5 lead. PAC scored another try before the half to lead 7-10.

Early in the second half, the PAC defense converged on prop Kerr Mone '06 from the 50m line, and Mone dished off to fullback Ben Purcell '06 for a race to the try line, resulting to a 12-10 Hoyas lead. The lead changed again, 12-17, when PAC added a try. But the Hoyas was not done when the forwards pounded the ball through the PAC defense with eightman Mike Zoch '06 plowing in for the game winning try 19-17. PAC threatened the Hoyas deep in their territory as the time expired. Georgetown will travel to Philadelphia next weekend for a match against UPenn, the 2004 EPRU Division 1 champion. Georgetown will host Mary Washington in the first round of the MARFU playoffs on March 26.

Outside center Mark Bittmann '05, fullback Ben Purcell '05, and eightman Mike Zoch '06 each scored a try. Team captain/flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added two conversions for four points.

February 19, 2005 vs. Maryland

Rockville, MD -- Georgetown kicked off the spring season with a victory against University of Maryland, 29-12, the third ranked team in PRU Division I. The Hoyas led at the half 10-5, but Maryland gained the lead early in the second half in a deadlocked match, with both teams trading scores. However, Georgetown controlled the rest of the match as the Hoyas finished off the Terps in the second half with three straight tries for 19 unanswered points. Georgetown will travel to James Madison next weekend.

Inside center Jeff Miller '06, lock Tom McKiernan '05, wing Paul Detjen '06, flanker Greg Suellentrop '05, and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added two conversions for four points.
