Spring 2004 Games Recap

April 24, 2004 Capital Cup vs. Catholic

Washington, DC -- Georgetown captured its seventh straight Capital Cup Championship to claim as the District's best team with a victory over Catholic, 34-0. The Hoyas have outscored Catholic 93-0 in its last three meetings. Six different players scored to end the Hoyas' season with a record of 11-3.

Wing Paul Detjen '06, inside center Jeff Miller '06, fullback Ben Purcell '05, outside center Greg Suellentrop '05, and eightman Mike Zoch '06 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added two conversions. Prop Kerr Mone '06 bulldozed through the Cardinal pack to score his first A side try.

April 4, 2004 Cherry Blossom Tourney vs. Northeastern

Manassas, VA -- In the second day of the Cherry Blossom Tournament, Georgetown was denied scoring opportunities against Northeastern to lose 0-10. In last spring's tournament, Georgetown defeated Northeastern in the Cup quarterfinals, 24-10.

The Hoyas were held scoreless for the first time since April 6, 2003 against Navy. Georgetown has lost its third in five games this season and currently has a 10-3 record going into the Capital Cup Championships for the best team in DC on April 24. Georgetown is the reigning six time Capital Cup Champions.

April 3, 2004 Cherry Blossom Tourney vs. Virginia Tech

Manassas, VA -- Georgetown defeated Virginia Tech to advance to the plate bracket, 17-5. The Hoyas held the Hokies scoreless in the first half and gave away a score in the second half.

Wing Paul Detjen '06, outside center Greg Suellentrop '05, and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added a conversion.

Scoring Summary:
1st Half:
Detjen, 5 (t); Suellentrop, 5 (t); Summa, 2 (c).

2nd Half:
VA Tech, 5 (t); Purcell, 5 (t).

April 3 , 2004 Cherry Blossom Tournament vs. Harvard

Manassas, VA -- Georgetown was disappointed by Harvard in the first game of the Cherry Blossom Tournament, 5-7. Harvard scored in their first possession but the Hoyas failed to execute in several scoring opportunities.

Wing Paul Detjen '05 scored the only try for the Hoyas.

March 28, 2004 MARFU Consolation vs. Virginia

Severna Park, MD -- Georgetown finished in third place in the Mid-Atlantic regionals with a victory against Virginia, 29-7. The Hoyas scored four tries in the first half but were contained to only one try in the second half. In the spring 2003 MARFU semifinals, Georgetown lost to Virginia, 28-12.

Wing Rich Staley '05 led the team scoring with two tries for 10 points. Flanker Dan Hartman '04, wing Paul Detjen '06, and outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added two conversions.

March 27, 2004 MARFU Semifinals vs. Radford

Severna Park, MD -- Georgetown's eight game win streak ends in the MARFU semifinals against Radford with the final score of 27-36. The Hoyas scored five tries against the defending national champion's six tries.

Inside Center Jeff Miller '06 scored two tries to lead the team scoring with 10 points. Wing Rich Staley '05, eightman Tom McKiernan '05, and outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 each scored a try. Scrumhalf Keith Summa '07 added a conversion.

March 20, 2004 vs. Temple

Temple, PA -- Georgetown advanced to its second straight Mid-Atlantic Final 4 with a victory over EPRU #1 team Temple with the final score of 29-12. Temple scored the first try of the game but Georgetown shut down Temple's scoring hopes and scored five tries for a complete sweep of the Pennsylvania opponents. In the MARFU semifinals last spring, Georgetown fell to Virginia 28-12. The Hoyas will play in Severn River, MD on March 27-28.

Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored two tries to lead the team scoring with 10 points. Prop Dan O'Toole '04, lock Matt Knox '04, and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added two conversions.

March 14, 2004 vs. Loyola (Baltimore)

Baltimore, MD -- Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored on a penalty play in the closing minutes to secure the win for Georgetown, 30-26. In their previous match on September 7, 2003, Georgetown defeated Loyola 54-3. A Loyola team claiming that the fall season outcome was a fluke, repeatedly responded to Georgetown's scores and challenged the Hoyas in their preparation for the MARFU playoffs. Georgetown will play on March 20 in the MARFU first round against Temple.

Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored two tries to lead the team scoring with 10 points. Flyhalf Keith Summa '07 kicked in a penalty kick and a conversion for five points. Inside center Jeff Miller '06 and wing Paul Detjen '06 each scored a try. Lock Jim Suehr '06 scored his first A side try.

February 28, 2004 vs. Kutztown

Reading, PA -- Georgetown finished off the Eastern Pennsylvania ranks and defeated the EPRU Division I #1 team Kutztown, 47-17. Though Kutztown responded to each Georgetown score, the opposition failed to stop Georgetown in the final 30 minutes of the match as the Hoyas ran away with 28 straight points. The Hoyas will play again in EPRU territory on March 20th in the first round of the Mid-Atlantic Championships against Temple. Georgetown defeated the top two teams in EPRU Division I in two weeks.

Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 capitalized on four penalty kicks and converted all five tries for a game leading 22 points. Flanker Dan Hartman '04 scored two tries for 10 points. Inside center Jeff Miller '06, outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored tries. Scrumhalf John Kolleng '06 scored his first A side try.

In the B Game, Hoyas B continued their dominance defeating a larger Kutztown B squad, 29-0. Flyhalf Adam Glazer '07 scored a try and added two conversions for 12 points. Outside center Charlie Brooks '07 scored two tries for 10 points, and wing Jeff Miller scored a try.

February 21, 2004 vs. West Chester

West Chester, PA -- Georgetown played in a round robin match against West Chester (Div 1 EPRU #2) and Villanova (Div 2). Georgetown held West Chester down and away from Hoyas' territory to win 12-10. Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored both tries for the Hoyas to lead the team scoring for 10 points, and flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added a conversion.

February 21, 2004 vs. Villanova

West Chester, PA -- In the first match against Villanova, Georgetown scored with less than a minute into the match and Villanova later responded with a 5-7 lead. However, the Hoyas erupted for six unanswered tries for the final scored of 37-7. Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored the hat trick with a game leading 15 points. Team captain/fullback Ben Purcell '05 scored two tries for 10 points. Inside center Jeff Miller '06 and wing Paul Detjen '06 each scored a try, and flyhalf Keith Summa '07 added a conversion.
