Fall 2005 Games Recap November 12, 2005 PRU Finals vs. Salisbury Baltimore, MD -- Georgetown lost in the Potomac Rugby Union Division II Championship match against Salisbury University with the final score of 10-15. Both teams advance to the PRU finals match dominating their conferences, and met again for the fourth straight year. Salisbury scored in the corner with 17 minutes into the match, as the Hoyas were held scoreless in the first half. In the second half, Salisbury converted on a penalty kick and were awarded a penalty try for a Georgetown infraction near the try line. Outside center Steve McMullin '07 had all of the Hoyas' scores with a penalty kick, a try and a conversion for 10 points. Georgetown finished the fall season 9-2, and The Hoyas will have the PRU #2 seed going into the Mid-Atlantic Regionals held in March 25, 2006, hosting the EPRU #2 team, St. Joseph's University of Philadelphia. November 5, 2005 PRU Semifinals vs. UMBC Washington, DC -- Georgetown will play in its fourth straight PRU Division 2 championship match with a victory against the second seeded team in the PRU East, University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), with the final score of 73-3. The Hoyas scored all of their eleven tries until UMBC converted on a penalty kick in the final minutes of the match. Georgetown will play Salisbury University in the championship game next Saturday. Outside center Steve McMullin '07 led the team scoring with two tries and seven conversions for 24 points. Wing Paul Detjen '06 scored a hat trick of tries for 15 points, and inside center Jeff Miller '06 scored two tries for 10 points. Tries were scored by fullback Ben Purcell, flanker Richard Vilmenay '08, and team captain Keith Summa '07, who also added two conversions. Playing in his final game as a Georgetown Rugger, flanker Nate "Maestro" Parker '06 scored his first A side try. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 40-0. October 29, 2005 PRU Quarterfinals vs. St. Mary's Washington, DC -- Georgetown moves on to the PRU Division II semifinal round with a victory against the fourth seeded team from PRU East, St. Mary's College with a final score of 76-12. The Hoyas were ahead by 26 points in the first half until St. Mary's got on the scoreboard in the closing minutes to half time. In the second half, Georgetown exploded for 50 points and to finish with a total of 12 tries in the game. Georgetown will host the semifinal round next Saturday. Outside center Steve McMullin '07 scored a try and converted eight tries for a team leading 21 points. Wings Paul Detjen '06 and Adam Glazer '07 each scored a hat trick of tries for 15 points each. Additional tries were scored by eightman Michael Zoch '06, hooker Eric Pallotta '07, fullback Ben Purcell, and lock Jim Suehr '06. Lock John Fisher-Thompson '09 scored his first A side try. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 26-5. Washington, DC -- Georgetown secured the #1 seed in the PRU Playoff's Western Conference with a victory shut out against American University, 48-0. The Hoyas dominated from the start with a bulldozing score by prop John Lampariello '06, and running away with five scores for 31 points in the first half. Georgetown added two more scores in the second half to finish an undefeated regular season against league opponents in four consecutive fall seasons. Georgetown will play in the first round of the PRU Playoffs on October 29. The Hoyas will have next weekend off since the league have to reschedule games from last weekend that were postponed due to the weather. Outside center Steve McMullin '07 led the team scoring with a try, five conversions, and a penalty kick for 18 points. Fullback Ben Purcell scored two tries for 10 points, and additional scores by flyhalf Keith Summa '07, hooker Eric Pallotta '07, eightman Michael Zoch '06, and Lampariello's first A side score. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 31-0. ------- Game Summary (Game B) 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 27-0. October 8, 2005 vs. Mount St. Mary's Emmitsburg, MD -- Georgetown extends to its third league victory against Mount St. Mary's University with the final score of 38-7. The game was relocated to the Mount's territory due to the inclement weather in the DC area, but it did not slow down the Hoyas dropping five scores for 31 points in the first half. However, Mount St. Mary's gained momentum to pressure Georgetown in the second half to dry out the Hoyas' run to only seven points. Georgetown will play its final regular season league game next Saturday against American University. The winner will get the top seeding in the Western Conference for the PRU playoffs. Outside center Steve McMullin '07 led the team scoring with two tries and three conversions for 16 points. Wing Paul Detjen '06 scored the hat trick of tries for 15 points. Scrumhalf John Kolleng '06 scored a try and wing John Castrigano '07 added a conversion. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 31-0. ------- Game Summary (Game B) Bethesda, MD -- Georgetown earned its second league victory against Catholic University with the final score of 25-10. The Hoyas opened with two scores by wings Steve McMullin '07 and Adam Glazer '07 until Catholic answered back with a corner try. Glazer scored again before the half. In the second half, Georgetown managed to score only a try and a penalty kick after outscoring the Cardinals 156-7 in its previous four meetings. Georgetown will host its third league game next Saturday against Mt. St. Marys. The wing duo accounted for all of Georgetown's points with Adam Glazer '07 leading the team scoring with a hat trick of tries for 15 points. Steve McMullin '07 scored a try, a conversion, and a penalty kick for 10 points. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 17-5. ------- Game Summary (Game B) 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 12-0. September 24, 2005 vs. Frostburg Frostburg, MD -- Georgetown began its PRU matrix schedule with a victory against an improved Frostburg State University squad with the final score of 36-7. Though Georgetown outscored Frostburg in its last four meetings, 234-14, the Hoyas were contained to only one try in the second half. The Hoyas were on the scoreboard first with inside center Joe Kemper '09 first A side score. After wing Steve McMullin '07 converted a penalty kick, Frostburg were awarded a penalty try caused by the Hoyas' infraction for Frostburg's only score of the match. The Hoyas added scores by scrumhalf John Kolleng '06, McMullin, and birthday boy lock Jim Suehr '06. Wing Steve McMullin '07 led all scores with a try, four penalty kicks, and two converted tries for 21 points. The Hoyas will play PRU opponent Catholic University next Saturday. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 20-7. ------- John Castrigano led all scores with a hat trick of tries for 15 points. Parkhouse scored a try, and converted three tries for 11 points. Georgetown B received forwards relief from prop Michael Zoch '06, who sneaked in a conversion for two points. Game Summary (Game B) 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 7-0. September 17, 2005 vs. Mary Washington Fredericksburg, VA -- Georgetown defeated Virginia Union rival, University of Mary Washington, 28-20. The match featured the same as previous games with momentum changes and the game being decided down to the final minutes. The Mothers capitalized early on the Hoyas' infraction and converted the penalty kick. Wing Adam Glazer '07 scored in the corner to finish out the first half with low scoring and defensive stops. The second half began with a Mary Washington try, and the Hoyas answered back with 17 straight points highlighting a pounding score by inside center Brion McGlinn '06 and flanker Richard Vilmenay '08 taking advantage of a turnover to outrun the opposition backs for over 40 meters. The Mothers came back with a penalty kick and another converted try to cut it down to 22-20, but the Hoyas converted two more penalty kicks with six minutes left into regulation to seal the victory. Wing Steve McMullin '07 converted three penalty kicks and two converted tries for a team leading 13 points. The match marks the Hoyas' third straight win against Mary Washington, but Georgetown's first victory early in the fall season on the Fredericksburg field in over six years. Georgetown will begin its PRU matrix matches next Saturday against Frostburg State. Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 5-3. ------- Game Summary (Game B) 2nd Quarter: 3rd Quarter : September 10, 2005 -- Blue & Gray Classic Gravelly Point, VA -- Georgetown kicked off the fall season finishing with two wins and a loss in the inaugural Blue & Gray Classic. Three teams from the North, including Salisbury and Penn, compete against three Southern division 1 teams, VA Tech, UVA, and George Mason, in college rugby's version of the Battle of Bull Run. The North won with the Hoyas and UPenn tying in points. VA Tech was the other team finishing 2-1. The event gave plenty of playing opportunities for over 60 Georgetown players, and several new players filled in positions for George Mason against Salisbury and UPenn. The Hoyas are in Fredericksburg, VA next Saturday, September 17 against Mary Washington. Game 1 vs. George Mason Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 3-0. Game 2 vs. Virginia Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 19-0. Game 3 vs. VA Tech Scoring Summary: 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 19-0. |
