Fall 2002 Games Recap November 2, 2002: Finals vs. Salisbury State Severn River, MD -- Georgetown defeated defending champs Salisbury State University with the final score of 22 - 10 to win its first Potomac Rugby Union Division 2 Championship. The Hoyas were out-matched in size coming into the competition, but the Hoyas were unbeaten against league opponents. Salisbury was also undefeated dating back to last spring when they finished third in the nation. Georgetown got on the scoreboard early in the first half when flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 converted a penalty kick from 15m out. Salisbury answered back 10 minutes later with a wing try in the corner off a lineout inside the Hoyas 22m. Ten minutes later, Salisbury added another try off loose play in the corner to increase their lead 3 - 10. With about 5 minutes left in the first half, outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored off a first phase scrum to place the ball under the posts. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added a conversion to tie the game. In the second half, Salisbury continued to attempt to pressure the Hoyas back 3 with their kicks. Georgetown used Salibury's offensive scheme against them with counter attacks, refusing to give up the ball. As both teams traded ball possession, Georgetown gained the momentum and the lead of the game after 25 minutes when outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 received a direct pass from flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 for a 30m run to the corner. Salisbury continued to attack the Hoyas backs and substituted larger players in attempt to intimidate the Georgetown squad. Georgetown's defense refused to allow Salisbury to gain ground and continued to shut down the Salisbury high powered offense. With 10 minutes left into regulation, wing Rich Rowe '05 blocked a kick on the 15m and was scooped up by flanker Dan Hartman '04 for a try to put away the defending champs. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added a conversion to cap off the 17 unanswered points in route to the Hoyas' first PRU Div 2 Championship and remained undefeated against league opponents. Georgetown moves on to the Mid-Atlantic Championships to be held in March 2003. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half time: tie, 10 - 10. October 26, 2002: Semifinals vs. Johns Hopkins Gravelly Point, VA -- Georgetown defeated Johns Hopkins with the final score of 40 - 17 to advance to the Potomac Rugby Union Championship round. Fullback Ben Purcell '05 scored two tries and flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 kicked in five conversions to lead the team scoring with 10 points each. Flanker Dan Hartman '04, lock Matthew Knox '04, outside center Greg Suellentrop '05, and hooker Dan Williams '03 each scored a try. The Hoyas will play next Saturday for the PRU Championships against the winner of the Salisbury/Navy game. Time and location is to be determined. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 26 - 5. October 19, 2002: First Round vs. George Washington Kenilworth Park, DC -- Georgetown defeated George Washington with the final score of 46 - 0 to advance to the semi final round of the PRU playoffs. After erupting for six tries in the first half, George Washington contained the scoring machine to only 12 points in the second half. Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 scored three tries to lead the team scoring with 15 points. Lock Matthew Knox '04, flanker Dan Hartman '04, eightman Justin Petrancosta '03, fullback Ben Purcell '05, and wing Eric Schlossberg '03 each scored a try. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 added six points off conversions. The Hoyas will play Johns Hopkins in the semi final round next Saturday at Gravelly Point (National Airport Fields). Time is to be determined. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 34 - 0. October 12, 2002: vs. American Kenilworth Park, DC -- Georgetown defeated American University with the final score of 42 - 16 to clinch the first place seed in the West bracket. After scoring first, the Hoyas allowed American to get back in the game as American capitalized on Georgetown mistakes and put up nine points off penalty kicks. As the lead changed four times and American ahead 14 - 16 with 10 minutes into the second half, Georgetown turned on the scoring gears and exploded for four more tries and held American scoreless. Flanker Dan Hartman '04 converted all six conversions to lead the team scoring with 12 points. Eightman Justin Petrancosta '03 scored two tries for 10 points. Scrumhalf Garrett Fitzgerald '03, fullback Ben Purcell '05, hooker Dan Williams '03, and flyhalf Greg Suellentrop '05 each scored a try. Georgetown will host the East #4 team George Washington this Saturday in the first round of the Potomac Rugby Union playoffs. Time and location is to be determined. In the B Game, Georgetown B fell to a mixed American University side with the final score of 7 - 15. Fullback Jason Griffin '03 scored the only try for the Hoyas, and outside center Ted Sack '06 added the conversion. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 14 - 13. October 5, 2002: vs. Frostburg State Kenilworth Park, DC -- Georgetown defeated Frostburg State with the final score of 72 - 7. With only five minutes into the match, the Hoyas yielded a 30m run on the left side of the field to a fired up Frostburg squad. Down by seven points, Georgetown overcame the challenge and scored 72 unanswered points to remain unbeaten in the PRU. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 led the team scoring with 22 points (2 penalty kicks, 8 conversions). Flanker Dan Hartman '04 had his second three try scoring match to end up with 15 points. Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05 and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each scored two tries for 10 points. Eightman Justin Petrancosta '03, scrumhalf Garrett Fitzgerald '03, and outside center Mark Bittmann '05 each scored a try. Next Saturday, Georgetown will play American University as the Hoyas look to finish in first place in the regular season. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 37 - 7. September 28, 2002: vs. UMBC Kenilworth Park, DC -- Georgetown defeated UMBC with the final score of 80 - 0. The Hoyas posted its consecutive shut out against a matrix opponent and scored 126 points in two games. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 led the team scoring with 25 points (try and 10 conversions). Flanker Dan Hartman '04 scored three tries for 15 points, including an assist to team captain Dan Williams '03 who scored his first try in his rugby career. Scrumhalf Garrett Fitzgerald '03 and fullback Ben Purcell '05 each had two tries for 10 points. Outside center Greg Suellentrop '05, wing Rich Rowe '05, and inside center Richard Staley '05 each scored a try. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 35 - 0. September 14, 2002: vs. Mt. St. Marys Emmitsburg, MD -- Georgetown defeated Mt. St. Mary's with the final score of 46 - 0. Playing in its first season in Division II, Georgetown shut down the former PRU Champs and had six players scoring tries. Flyhalf Jake Ludwigson '05 led the team scoring with 16 points, including a penalty kick from 45m out. Wing Eric Schlossberg '03 scored 10 points with two tries. Eight Man Justin Petrancosta '03, scrumhalf Greg Suellentrop '05, fullback Ben Purcell '05, and outside center Mark Bittmann '05 each scored a try. In the B Game, fullback Jason Griffin '03 scored the only try to secure the victory with the final score of 5 - 3. Scoring Summary 2nd Half: Half Time: Georgetown, 22 - 0 |
