Spring 2009: John Fisher-Thompson's ('09) Marine Commission

John Fisher-Thompson was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps on May 15, 2009 at the Iwo Jima Memorial in Rosslyn, VA. The ceremony involved the reading of the Presidential commission by Captain Potter emphasizing the trust the nation put in the new officer. John's mom and dad pinned the new lieutenant's gold bars on his shoulders and then John presented a silver dollar to the first enlisted man to salute the new officer as part of all old Marine Corps tradition. The enlisted man was Command Sergeant Major John McConnell, who was the primary military instructor at St. Johns College High School, which John attended. During the past four years, John participated in the Platoon Leaders Course (PLC) in Quantico, Virginia participating in two rigorous Officer Candidate School summer sessions. John will report for duty June 2 at The Basic School (TBS), also at Quantico. Following the roughly six months training at TBS, John will be assigned a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and then undertake further training before moving into a command position with the Corps.
