Hoyas Fall in National D2 Semis
May 1, 2009 -- Georgetown lost in the Semi Final round of the USA Rugby National Guard College Club Championship against eventual national champs Middlebury College, 18-45. The match proved as a challenge for the Hoyas against the Northeast #1 team and the three-time Big 4 finalist, but the Hoyas' found themselves ahead at half time in a low scoring game due to the Hoyas' defensive pressure. The second half went in favor of the opponent though Georgetown kept the game close as Middlebury repeatedly disrupted Georgetown's pattern and disorganized the Hoya defense, entering the try zone six more times to Georgetown's two scores. Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 led the team scoring with two penalty kicks and a conversion for eight points. Tries were scored by flanker Mike Wrotniak '12 and prop Jordan Maitland '12. Hoyas Going to Big Four in California
April 18, 2009 -- Georgetown defeated Cal Maritime, 20-17, in the National D2 Elite 8 playoff to advance to the USA Rugby National Guard College Club Championship Big Four held in Palo Alto, California in two weeks. Early in the first half, the Hoyas found themselves down by two tries against the heavily favored #2 seed in the playoffs. Georgetown climbed back with converted scores from inside center Brendan Smith '10 and a charging score from hooker Matt Hammel '10 to lead by four at the half. In the second half, Cal Maritime scored early, and Georgetown responded with two penalty kicks by flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 to tie and take the lead, respectively. The rest of the 20 minutes for the game was inspired defense by the Hoyas that shut down the high scoring Pacific #1 team. This marks Georgetown trip to the National Big Four since 2005. Hoyas Advance to Elite 8 in 34-13 Win
April 17, 2009 -- Georgetown advance to the National D2 Elite 8 after their 34-13 win against University of Maine Orono, the Northeast #2 team. The Hoyas came out strong early with a score in the first five minutes, and led by two scores most of the first half, giving up a penalty kick to close the half. In the second half, Maine scored in the outside to lessen the deficit, but Georgetown finished up the rest with three more tries. On Saturday, Georgetown will play against Cal Maritime at 10am on Field #6.

Fullback Phil Cooney '10 led the team scoring with three tries. Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 added three conversions and a penalty kick for nine points. Tries were scored by inside center Brendan Smith '10 and eightman Joe Kemper '09.

Hoyas Fall in MARFU Finals for Sweet 16 #7 Seed
March 29, 2009 -- Georgetown lost in the MARFU Regional Finals, 12-24, against Salisbury University to get the National D2 Sweet 16 #7 seed, held in Sanford, Florida on April 17-19. The finals match proved to be another battle against the PRU conference rivals, this time playing for the overall top seed for Nationals. Salisbury entered the scoreboard first with an early penalty kick, but the Hoyas challenged the PRU Champs for two tries in the first half to lead at the half. The second half had momentum changes but Salisbury took advantage of their opportunities as Georgetown looked to wear down breaking through the Hoya defense for three unanswered tries and prevented Georgetown's scoring hopes. Next weekend, Georgetown will defend their touney championship at the annual Cherry Blossom Tournament.

Hoyas Advance to MARFU Final 4
March 21, 2009 -- Georgetown defeated Bloomsburg University, 47-10, to advance to its sixth MARFU Final 4 in seven years. The Hoyas faced the physical EPRU D2 #2 ranked team, going back and forth until Georgetown scored back to back tries midway into the first half to lead by 20 points at half time. The Hoyas added four more tries in the second half, and Bloomsburg's scores were early in the second half and another to end the game. Next weekend, Georgetown will travel to Bridgeport, PA and will play Mary Washington (VRU #1) in the semi final round.

Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 led the team scoring with two penalty kicks and three conversions for 12 points. Team Captain Phil Cooney '10 and wing Mike Kolleng '09 each scored two tries for 10 points each. Hoyas Edge Towson on Spring Break
March 7, 2009 -- Georgetown defeated Towson University, 28-22, before the Hoyas left on their spring break. Both teams scored four tries each, but Georgetown's half time lead was enough as Towson's late second half surge fell short and the Hoyas converting their kicks. Georgetown played it's final friendly game in preparation for MARFUs against Bloomsburg University from Pennsylvania when they return from break.

Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 converted all four kicks for eight points. Tries were scored by scrumhalf Brian Litwak '10, fullback Phil Cooney '10, and inside center Brendan Smith '10. Prop Jesse Mueller '10 scored his first A side try.

In a shortened game of 10s, Georgetown B defeated Towson B 12-7.

Hoyas Fall in Friendly Game vs. UMBC
February 28, 2009 -- Georgetown lost to The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), 7-10, in its third friendly game this spring. The Hoyas were challenged throughout the game against an energized UMBC team, who Georgetown handily defeated in league play during the fall season. Georgetown applied the pressure early and had several missed scoring opportunities, but were held scoreless and allowed two opposition scores including one in the closing minutes. Next Saturday, Georgetown will play its final game before spring break against Towson University and will return to host the first round of MARFUs.

Team Captain Phil Cooney '10 scored the only try for the Hoyas, and flyhalf Dan Castrigano added a conversion.

GEORGETOWN B RECAP:
Georgetown B scored seven tries to defeat UMBC B, 41-12. Inside center Matteo Gomez '11 led the team scoring with two tries and two conversions for 14 points. Wing Joey Angiuli '12 scored two tries for 10 points. Tries were scored by eightman Jimmy Burbage '11, flanker Nico Eisler '12, and wing Grayson Wieder-Finch '11. Flanker Ian Palm '12 added a conversion.

Hoyas Score 7 Tries in Win vs. VCU
February 21, 2009 -- Georgetown defeated Virginia Commonwealth University, 41-10, in its second friendly game this spring. The Hoyas traveled south to more pleasant weather outside of Richmond and entered the end zone several times early in the game against the VRU D2 team. Next Saturday, Georgetown will play the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).

Tries were scored by eightman Joe Kemper '09, scrumhalf Brian Litwak '10, flanker Mike Wrotniak '12, inside center Brendan Smith '10, fullback Mike Kolleng '09, wing Joey Angiuli '12, and wing Sam Perkins '11. Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 added three conversions for six points.

GEORGETOWN B RECAP:
Georgetown B defeated VCU B 38-5. Outside center Ben Moore '12 led the team with a hat trick for 15 points. Playing in both games, scrumhalf Brian Litwak '11 kicked in four conversions for eight points. Tries were scored by Grayson Weider-Finch '11, Sean Herrle '11, and fullback Joey Angiuli '12.

Hoyas Fall to UVA in Spring Opener
February 14, 2009 -- Georgetown lost to University of Virginia, 22-31, in a friendly game to open it's spring season. The Hoyas challenged the MARFU Premier League team in Charlottesville, leading at half time. UVA scored early in the second half and Georgetown responded, but the rest was UVA entering the try zone three unanswered times to the game's closing seconds, taking advatange of the Hoyas' penalties and errors. Next Saturday, Georgetown will travel to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, which finished 4th place in the VRU D2 playoffs last fall.

Hooker Matt Hammel '10 led the team scoring with a hat trick of tries for 15 points. Flyhalf Dan Castrigano '09 scored seven points with a penalty kick and two conversions.
